Local Councils fund Tip Removal

We’re delighted that 2 of our local councils have worked together to help us fund the removal of the Tip which has been such a blockage to our restoration of the Wendover Canal near Tring. Dacorum Borough Council have provided £135,000, and Tring Town Council £20,000, as detailed at this link . The Wendover Canal Trust thanks both councils for supporting our long-held ambition to open this section for all to enjoy.

We plan a special week in August when one of our expert volunteers (and trustee) Will Mathew will excavate and load the material onto lorries, controlled by volunteer banksmen. The lorries will take it to the large FCC site at Calvert. We have tested this process over the last few months and are confident of success.

The Tip consists of domestic refuse from Tring Urban District Council. They paid a small sum to the then-private owners of the canal to dump the refuse from 1919-28. The waste consists largely of black ash, with some broken glass and pottery. The lorries have retractable tops to prevent the ash blowing away.

In August we aim to remove the majority of the ash. We’ll be leaving what’s under our volunteers’ car park and entrance area, until we have completed relining the rest of this section.
